A communal artist led performance on a tiny island site in the Mangamahu Stream, digging into our embodied connection with the whenua and the poetic construct of being an island together. The work seeks a deeper relationship with the Earth we inhabit in the critical context of Climate Emergency; Island, Is Land, We Land is a shared act of bare, ritual stillness. The concept also reflects narratives of isolation and togetherness in COVID-19 times. Participants gathered stream-side and removed their clothing, swimming naked to the island where 2 buckets of Papa rock, collected and carried to the site from Kai Iwi were waiting. With slow purposeful intent we collectively covered each other with the soft Papa in a connected movement of bodies, breath and voice.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1s1nsaJ2hkbrGuqEGSc55rjNrLFTiUCJusOMydEIe-kTSNeOHPQMPneH4JG8iNGTjs0MVrqHcX_tl_iz74CqfbSPKm2MhHpYWT74Oas_3zpmjhL3UlLBMtWOE3DyOX9LnDxI5MzpETKNsrVqsAJvs_DDnHlt2KUhxAFQs_obUGzkHqi1QCVzFgvVVzQ/s6240/lsland_2brood.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="6240" data-original-width="4160" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1s1nsaJ2hkbrGuqEGSc55rjNrLFTiUCJusOMydEIe-kTSNeOHPQMPneH4JG8iNGTjs0MVrqHcX_tl_iz74CqfbSPKm2MhHpYWT74Oas_3zpmjhL3UlLBMtWOE3DyOX9LnDxI5MzpETKNsrVqsAJvs_DDnHlt2KUhxAFQs_obUGzkHqi1QCVzFgvVVzQ/w426-h640/lsland_2brood.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSzLhvRd6H6Zg_dXdONw2O543GqOlzrNRRmyjNdGkOeDCPEnbSl5nH1E7FrF0_diUyFwajEYcWUvRxF5PmaJe6Tk4v0JSTLIC_m4-tGM11WzL2G34y6pTFD_aJEomeURykOxzHuA2UHkZDtoGsKqy7F_C8XDhlG6x5k3D_Txi0h1YO-sW69zQ9NI_P5w/s6240/Island_3brood.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="6240" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSzLhvRd6H6Zg_dXdONw2O543GqOlzrNRRmyjNdGkOeDCPEnbSl5nH1E7FrF0_diUyFwajEYcWUvRxF5PmaJe6Tk4v0JSTLIC_m4-tGM11WzL2G34y6pTFD_aJEomeURykOxzHuA2UHkZDtoGsKqy7F_C8XDhlG6x5k3D_Txi0h1YO-sW69zQ9NI_P5w/w640-h426/Island_3brood.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE657C7fWfji3PkZfMh7uhJYiWZpO6oGZCw7J-VYe-u94YyGUqDXAQXU9UkDR4a4wHces4nwZtAwtV0uZQzT07IOI71jzwoaLgejAcVsYUjP8Qzhpmy6joVzqHPV-LR7NqqxLiK_-Yox5uYqLsgHE70Q49g2mdBueprGNn_2RsS9aTihI_LnfGz03rmw/s6240/Island_5brood.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="6240" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE657C7fWfji3PkZfMh7uhJYiWZpO6oGZCw7J-VYe-u94YyGUqDXAQXU9UkDR4a4wHces4nwZtAwtV0uZQzT07IOI71jzwoaLgejAcVsYUjP8Qzhpmy6joVzqHPV-LR7NqqxLiK_-Yox5uYqLsgHE70Q49g2mdBueprGNn_2RsS9aTihI_LnfGz03rmw/w640-h426/Island_5brood.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Island, Is land, We Land | Photography and Sound Installation</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui - The Sarjeant Gallery 2022 | Images: Brydee Rood 2021</span></div></div></div>Brydee Roodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11805033187929766406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1890169947775263414.post-45825438861893321672022-12-03T16:22:00.004+13:002022-12-04T18:24:53.523+13:00A Future Canopy A Future Canopy | Living Sculpture | Brydee Rood 2021 | Whanganui NZ <br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">A Future Canopy consists of six species of native trees; Tōtara, Kōwhai, Pūriri, Rata, Rewarewa and Miro - spread across the two green islands of the Burton Avenue to provide a continual food source of flowers, nectar and fruit for native fauna and pollinators. The habitat created will cater to the local birdlife and residents over generations to come. The inherent physicality and plant lore of the chosen trees creates a living composition that will enrich local ecology in the suburban landscape.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The official opening and planting day on Monday June 14 2021, involved sixty students from Whanganui East School, Whanganui Girls’ College, Cullinane College, St Anne’s Catholic School. As part of the project, each school planted a tree at this site and were gifted selection of native trees for their own satellite plantings on school grounds. A Future Canopy, was developed as a permanent public artwork with support from the Whanganui District Council parks team, the community arts coordinator and funding from the Eleanor Burgess Trust. Everything Rises was an artist lead collective walk in the rising tide under the rising full moon. A peaceful immersive intertidal sea walk in the elements, in formation. The walk is a movement tracing the incoming tide with a hand tied, glowing line of 400 solar lights carried by participants. A climate emergency vigil in contemplation of the nature around us and the future changing landscapes of low lying coastal areas and the implications of our human footprint.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>

A Remedy for Hopelessness - Te Henga Gorse Collection Ritual | Performance, Photography and Drone Capture Video | Te Henga Auckland NZ | Supported by <a href="https://mairangiarts.co.nz/exhibition/artist-residence-brydee-rood" target="_blank">MAC Artist in Residence Programme</a> | Brydee Rood 2019 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A Remedy for Hopelessness involved a ritual collecting of Gorse Bushes Gorse; Ulex europaeus of the Fabaceae (pea) family from land at Te Henga over several continuous hours of the day. The performance references the healing nature of the plant, the Gorse state of being, meshing with one's own feelings of despair in the face of human failure, unrelenting capitalism, climate change and extinction; working through contemporary intersections of art, caretaking, landscape and ecology. The work engages visual and conceptual narratives that stretch between the colonially rampant weed and the golden-yellow flowering bush - known as a Bach Flower Remedy for Hopelessness. </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gorse has tenacious roots and like other legumes it catalyses nitrogen from the upper atmosphere – with a special ability to bring fertility and vitality to otherwise isolated and barren soils flourishing resilient in places where other vegetation cannot. It is these penetrating and fierce qualities of Gorse, which have personally driven me to work with it in my performance as part of a new body of work. The essence of Gorse is intrinsically connected with the gathering of the Gorse bushes. By working with Gorse at a physical level, I embody a poetic contemplation of its medicinal, magical and permacultural properties and values; contemplating its relationship to wellbeing through creative practice. This collecting of Gorse Bushes marks the beginning of a new direction in my work.</div>

A Dance That Lasts Forever | Installation | Waiheke Island Sculpture on the Gulf NZ | Brydee Rood 2019<br />
As the work creates a movement with the wind and the site, it reflects the dance
of our consumed traces repeating in nature. Echoing the drift of micro-plastics
carried in the elements a dance of dire consequence for ocean habitats and
marine species. By hoisting large colour sheets to the wind, soft plastics flutter on
lines that lean and tilt with a precarity that is true to its context. I am placing the
material again in our path, floating visibly in our mind’s eye. A dance that passes
through our touch so fleetingly yet a dance that lasts forever.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Solar Nap Coal Rest is about energy, sustainability and climate change – encircling dialogues about personal and collective power systems, fossil fuels, the national grid and New Zealand’s current political posturing around these critical concerns. I lay in the intertidal zone of Island Bay, taking a nap before the rising tide and setting sun. I was cocooned in a gold emergency survival blanket with my head on a pillow of raw coal nuggets and a line of solar powered LEDs drawing a line up to the high tide mark. There’s strength in lying there and knowing that the ocean is coming up, feeling resilient yet fragile in a freezing Wellington onshore gale. For most of us the knowledge that the ocean is rising rests somewhere in the recesses of our minds. Uncomfortable, but far from urgent. This work asks us to consider "Can we afford to take a nap in the face of climate change?"</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We Are Weather saw me collaborate with paleoclimatologist and University of Auckland Associate professor Anthony Fowler HOD of Environmental Studies in the development of an installation, workshop and performance project for the TEMP exhibition of art, science and climate change. In Please Return Me to the Earth 10.8 tons of Huntly coal quantifying the average NZ household's carbon footprint is installed in the centre of the park-like grounds on a wider bed of wood-chips. The performance involved a ritual arrival and dumping of the coal to a grounded public site with an experimental droning composition of earthly, ceremonial bagpipes derived from the iconic musical score Dark Isle by Iain MacLachlan 1963 and a gravitas gathering, collective contemplation, sharing and handling of the coal. Assisting Performer: Robyn Jordaan, Bagpipes: Lewis MacDonald. We Are Weather was generously supported by <a href="http://www.creativenz.govt.nz/">Creative NZ</a></div>

Please Return Me to the Earth Part 2 involved the actual writing out of the 10.8tonnes of coal from Part 1, following the terrain of the landscape in Western Park Auckland and measuring 86m long by 7m high. Through this process the coal physically completes an organic cycle of returning to the ground and allowing the carbon to break down into the earth and biodegrade naturally. The text installation was completed through a public working bee supported by <a href="http://www.generationzero.org/">Generation Zero</a> and TEMP. </div>

Silageballenchor has evolved in response to the tide of agricultural waste residue from the plastic wrapping of silage bales with single use plastic stretch film. Schöppingen being in the heart of a vast agricultural terrain and in my home land of milk, butter, sheep and beef - New Zealand, these pale green marshmallow plastic wrapped bales that punctuate our landscape and their material dialogue with disposal and single use virgin plastics have inspired this direction in my work. The issue, like the clinging silage film, stretches far and wide on a global scale.<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "century gothic" , sans-serif , serif , "emojifont"; font-size: 13.3333px;"> </span></div>

Silageballenchor seeks to re-navigate our relationship with the agricultural waste, which underscores our daily life and habits of consumption. A purposeful movement within plastic shrouds and an experimental voice worship meld together to explore a spirited channeling of light, voice and material through the site; a stone labyrinth, at the foot of the St. Bratcius bell tower. The centre of the labyrinth is marked by a Chi-Rho symbol - a sign often used to mark a particularly valuable or relevant passage, one plastic wrapped silage bale is positioned directly over it within a composition of 3 illuminated silage bales intercepting the labyrinth passage as sacred objects of ritual.<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "century gothic" , sans-serif , serif , "emojifont"; font-size: 10pt; text-align: justify;"> </span>In New Zealand, although there are collection and recycling systems in place where clean collected silage wrap matter is collected and shipped to Malaysia to await its reincarnation as future plastic material, you can still find used silage wrap draped along fences, thrown into rubbish holes, abandoned in paddocks and piled up in mounds awaiting illegal burning. Around 320,000 kilometres of silage wrap is used and disposed of every year in New Zealand - enough to wrap nearly 8 times around the circumference of the Earth. </div>

We Come From the Sea, We Seek Higher Ground | Brydee Rood 2017 | Installation at <a href="http://artweekauckland.co.nz/events/central/5757183006343168" target="_blank">Artweek Auckland</a> with <a href="https://www.heartofthecity.co.nz/auckland-events/artweek/changing-lanes" target="_blank">Heart of the City</a>. We Come From the Sea, We Seek Higher Ground in Durham Street East suggests a vessel washed up by a surging wave, dumped at the feet of city dwellers at a point 200m inland from the city’s original shoreline and quiescent beneath a skyline of stormy fragments. The work contemplates issues of climate change, rising tides, changing environments and survival. Materials: Bear Grylls Survival Blankets, Bells, Kayak, Oyster Shells. Funded by Auckland Council and Heart of the City, delivered in partnership with Artweek Auckland. </div>

Forever Fanning Futures - We Are Weather | Brydee Rood 2017 | A collaborative workshop and installation project exhibited in TEMP Auckland | Generously Supported by <a href="http://www.creativenz.govt.nz/" target="_blank">Creative NZ</a>. Forever Fanning Futures was collectively created; the 500 fans were installed as a precarious organic cloud-like installation in the ceiling space of the old Saint Michaels and All Angels Chapel at <a href="https://ceac.org.nz/" target="_blank">Corban Estate Art Centre</a>. An openly penetrable art installation responding to the critical issue of climate change and how it relates to young minds. </div>

Floating with a composition of survival blanket pieces on the Whanganui River, I became a caretaker and guardian of the river, seeking balance within a fragile relationship between man and river, the precarious materiality of the pieces an ever shifting dialogue. Survival River Series speaks to the state of emergency faced by many rivers across the world and our complex role as poisoners and potential saviours.<br />

There is something very fascinating to me that exists between ritual and habit; of the things we do habitually versus an act of ritual, it seems pretty murky and vague sometimes, maybe some old habits become rituals and some old rituals become habits - the conscious, unconscious, practiced and learnt knowledge that inherently develops our mentality and belief structure and the age old questioning of why we do the things we do? Man’s contemporary relationship with water is questionable, underscored by geopolitics; viewed as a resource to be used, polluted, wasted and consumed at a price all be it economic, social and environmental. The work seeks to quiet the imposed value of water within a capitalist structure, to evoke an alternative value and express a reverent positive memory exchange with the body of water existing within us and connecting us to the earths Rivers.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Catalogue Text - HH Art Spaces & Residencies Open 9: Monsoon Prayer for Anjuna River is a ritual steeped in the fluid landscape, the artist leads a silent ceremony in the depth of Goa's Monsoon, a communication with the water echoing a sensitive human footfall between earth and sky, a slow meditative prayer for our rapidly changing climate. The old steps form a passage between man and river - by occupying this space, 3 bodies wearing hand painted clay Matka water-pots over their heads and cloaked in garments folded, draped, dyed with natural indigo and detailed with drawings which reference invented ritual, water and change gods - seek confluence within bodies of water, monsoon, patterns of climate change and the localised water festivities of Sao Joao. Geopolitically the action is underscored by the here and now, it is part of an ongoing movement titled 'We Are Weather' reflecting a yearning for our deeper connection with the natural world; the River, weather, to water as an essential life force, not limited as a commodity, resource, thing to be used, consumed, wasted, polluted and profited by in a flailing globalised capitalist system. </div>

What is perceived today may not exist tomorrow… | Performance, video and installation project at <a href="http://www.asianz.org.nz/">Asia:NZ Foundation</a> and <a href="http://www.cemetiarthouse.com/index.php?page=exhibition&id=47&lang=en">Cemeti Art House Residency Pasang Air #2</a> Yogyakarta Indonesia 2016</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Indonesian Art Researcher Stanislaus Yangni writes: Rood’s intimate works evolve from an enduring personal passion with the natural world and ecological issues. During the residency, she choose water as an element to speak about human alienation with nature, and created a live bathing project in Sendang Kasihan, Bantul Village; her work was an encounter between mysticism, tradition, environmental change and peoples everyday habits relating with water. What is perceived today may not exist tomorrow… is the title of Rood’s installation containing 6 video works within a multi channel video and sound project. <i>The Rainmaker</i> (2 videos), <i>Bodies of Water</i> (3 videos) and <i>Rain Keeps Falling</i> (1 video) offer us a meditative perception.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">The inspiration for the 52 flags comes from the Sikh tradition and story of Diwali, the narrative as a metaphor for the procession that we will make has many relevant crossovers to contemporary life, migration, climate change, displaced peoples, the act of coming to new lands; fusing these universal narratives together in a localised Auckland multicultural context and the unique platform which gives a voice to contemporary art practice and navigates both physical and theoretical space between the Auckland Art Gallery and the Diwali Festival.</span></div>

During the Arts Science Economy Residency with Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen I held a memorial service for waste plastic PVC windows involving a pilgrimage to the local factory site of waste PVC windows and a collaboration with the town’s Firemen’s Band. The sound installation and performance was situated directly within the factory bounds both indoors and outside amongst the mountainous piles of waste windows; broken, smashed and discarded PVC frames, heaped and strewn, peppered with glass, metal bits, foam oddities formed a new landscape within the existing semi industrial semi rural surrounds. Like a pilgrimage to a sacred land or temple, the act of bringing an audience to this site of collected waste became an integral part of the work. The performance was an experimental funeral composition, hinting at life cycles and reincarnation, a serenade to the windows which frame our existence; in architecture, such common things - we look out of windows everyday, separating us from the outdoors - yet here the retired windows accumulated, put out to pasture, forming a bizarre material landscape.</div>

A <a href="https://www.boosted.org.nz/news-events/tidelines-presented-by-boosted-waterfront-auckland" target="_blank">TIDELINES</a> project curated by Jaenine Parkinson in tandem with Waterfront Auckland, The Arts Foundation - Boosted NZ, <a href="http://www.silopark.co.nz/" target="_blank">Silo Park</a>. Rood performed the work in collaboration with <a href="http://tamashii.co.nz/" target="_blank">Tamashii Taiko</a> Drummers. The performance of A Warm Breeze Blowing unfolded on on a stepped terrace, intersecting where land meets sea. The essential action of dumping a sacred offering of 4tonnes of melting ice from Sanfords the local seaside fish market, onto the sea steps to greet the rising tide was a ritual act of global cooling. </div>

Rood harnessed energy, carrying a handmade 6meter bamboo flag cut from gold and silver foil emergency survival blankets, tracing a line of quickening pace through the wheat-fields of Badisher Valley in Morni Hills. River Flag melded into a series of a ritual flag-bearing movements intersecting the point where land meets the flow of the Ghaggar River atop an outstanding rock where lies a small Khera(a temple). Rood struck a balance of power shifting the fluid sheet of the metallic flag in mesmerizing formations adorned in a poncho hewn from local Punjabi Jai Mata Di prayer flags. Jai Mata Di is an ancient hail to the mother of the universe, evoked in Roods performance through her considered use of materials channelling a visual prayer for the survival and wellbeing of the rivers of Mother Earth. River Flag slowed as Rood took pause on the Khera, kneeling steadfast in a firm breeze connecting water, rock and wind.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Matheran Waste Cart Procession was created as a direct response to the environs of Matheran - meaning "forest on the forehead" an eco sensitive Bombay Hill station “discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. Today Matheran is a very curious place, without modes of popular transport cars, bikes, busses... the tradition of riding by horseback, hand pulled cart or walking prevails and impacts positively on daily life, an inviting lush destination popular with visitors. On the other hand - the impacts and residues of human waste are evident throughout the delicate habitat. Plummeting breath taking views into Matheran’s green valleys are belied by accumulated carpets of thrown plastic bottles, food packets, snack plates... The evidence of a contemporary human presence carelessly left in the wake of their collective daily life. From Market to Dumping Ground - Matheran Waste Cart Procession spurred from the context of life in Matheran Hills, a performance action, which involved high-jacking a working rubbish collection cart, and honouring its workers and the process of waste collection by unfolding a series of a sacred rituals throughout the procession from the main market place to the Matheran Dumping Ground. We created garments from silver plates, leaf plates and recycled fabrics; we decorated Jharoo with gold and silver foils and ribbons, and used them like warrior’s arms or ceremonial staffs. Our heads were adorned with a crowning 3rd eye for nature something befitting the forest on the forehead and empowering the inner eco- warrior and garbage goddess queen.<br />

Ikebana Bins | Brydee Rood 2015 | <a href="http://sculptureonthegulf.co.nz/">Headland Sculpture on the Gulf</a> Waiheke Island New Zealand | Materials: Assorted Native Flora, Soil, Wheelie Bins - Waste Management Waiheke Island, Gold and Silver Leaf | Text: Too many times my ears have mourned the hateful scream of neighbours’ wielding chainsaws and when questioned - dropping comments like - ‘rubbish trees’ and ‘wasted space’ to describe an area of overgrown garden where natives and weeds have tangled up and taken over a patch of land. As a response to the ‘clearing’ without consideration for, or knowledge of native species or otherwise, of such suburban landscapes, Ikebana Bins is an eco-sensitive series of seven portable planters. Focusing on living native flora arrangements and using common wheelie bins as an earth vessel and inspired by giant Ikebana - a contemporary genre of Ikebana - Japanese floral arrangement and guided by the principle that Ikebana is a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. Jiyuka Ikebana is a free creative design and every material can be used. In opposition to the painful screech of chainsaws, contemplative silence is said to be significant in achieving a spiritual ikebana experience.</div>

Trigongle tri-gong-glee [tráj-gɔ́ŋ-glí] envelopes concepts around traveller and messenger, locating the triangle as a vehicle for our expression and passage. Within a language of process, performance and video, isolation and togetherness are pairing up and coming alive in various corners and dimensions. Trigongle conveys the feeling of what a long journey might have been in the past and how it could play out in the future. Trigongle is a continuation of an ongoing collaboration between Karin Hokfo and Brydee Rood; performance is a recurring medium in both of their practices and features in Trigongle as a shaping of collective experience, ritual and knowledge in their quest for earthly wellbeing and survival.</div>
